The Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest

For foreigners living in Bucharest and for those coming from another country: which languages we speak, how to prepare your visit from a distance, how many visits each treatment needs and what it costs.

Patients from abroad: who this guide is for

An English-speaking dentist in Bucharest who treats patients from abroad has to take care of two more things besides the treatment itself: language and time. This guide is for:

  • foreigners who live or work in Bucharest;
  • patients from Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova who have settled here or are staying in Romania for a while;
  • Romanians living abroad who come home on leave or for the holidays;
  • patients who come to Bucharest specifically for treatment.

For this last group, the term “dental tourism” is often used. We prefer to talk about well-planned treatment that takes into account how long you are staying in Bucharest.

Which languages we speak

At the clinic we speak Romanian, Russian, Ukrainian, English and French. You can discuss the problem, the treatment options and the prices in whichever language you are comfortable with, so you understand exactly what is being proposed. Let us know your preferred language when you book.

Preparing your visit to a dentist in Bucharest from abroad

  1. Send us what you have: a recent X-ray, ideally a panoramic one, and a short description of the problem and of any treatment you've had. Email us at contactlightdentalclinic.ro or call us on 0772 022 100 (from abroad, +40 772 022 100).
  2. Tell us when you're coming and how long you're staying, so we can see what can be done in that time.
  3. Find out what can be estimated. The dentist will tell you what can be seen from the material you've sent and what will only be known at the examination: inflamed gums don't show on an X-ray, and a cavity between teeth doesn't always show up on a panoramic X-ray.
  4. Book the consultation at the start of your stay, so there is time left for treatment and a check-up.
  5. Bring a list of the medicines you take, and tell us about any allergies and chronic conditions.

The consultation and the written plan

The first step at the clinic is a consultation with a treatment plan, which costs 330 lei. The dentist examines your teeth and gums, takes diagnostic photographs and, if new X-rays are needed, tells you which type and why. You receive the plan in writing, with the stages, the number of sessions and the prices in lei; the exact price is the one in the plan. We don't start anything without your agreement. Payment is made at reception after each session, and for treatment in several stages, stage by stage.

How many visits each treatment needs

  • Fillings, including laser fillings: finished at the same visit.
  • Root canal treatment: usually one or two visits.
  • Crowns and ceramic veneers: usually two visits, 7 to 10 days apart (preparation and impression, then try-in and fitting), with a temporary restoration in between.
  • Implants: the implant is placed in one session, followed by about 3 months of healing, because the implant needs time to integrate with the bone before the final prosthetic work is fitted. For patients from abroad this usually means two trips; after bone grafting or a sinus lift, healing can take longer. In some situations, temporary solutions or accelerated protocols may be possible if the dentist considers them suitable.
  • In-clinic whitening: usually one visit, on teeth with no cavities and after a professional cleaning; sometimes a second session is needed.

You'll find out how many days you need to stay after the consultation; we can't promise a number of days before we've seen you.

Dentist in Bucharest: indicative prices

Many patients ask us how much a dental implant or a crown costs in Romania. Here are some prices from the clinic's price list:

TreatmentPrice
Consultation + treatment plan330 lei
Laser fillingfrom 350 lei
Porcelain-fused-to-metal crown1,050 lei
Zirconia crownfrom 1,400 lei
Ceramic veneer, per toothfrom 2,500 lei
Implant placement (Israel, Korea / Germany, Switzerland, Italy)2,250 / 3,400 lei
Implant abutment600 lei
Porcelain-fused-to-metal crown on an implant1,450 lei
In-clinic whitening1,400 lei

For example, a complete implant with an abutment and a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown costs roughly 2,250 + 600 + 1,450 = 4,300 lei with an implant from Israel or Korea and 5,450 lei with one from Germany, Switzerland or Italy, not including X-rays and scans, or bone grafting or a sinus lift if needed. We won't tell you that treatment will cost less than at home: we give you a clear plan, and the comparison and the decision are yours.

Practical information

The clinic is at Strada Roma nr. 28, Sector 1, București 011774, in the Dorobanți area, about a 10-minute walk from Piața Victoriei metro station (lines M1 and M2). Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 20:00; we are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. You can book by phone, by email or online, on our website.

The documents you receive

Before treatment you receive the written plan, and after payment, the fiscal documents. If you want to claim the cost back from an insurer in the country where you live, ask your insurer before treatment which documents are needed.

A few honest tips before you travel

  • Don't buy your return ticket before talking to the dentist: after some procedures, such as a sinus lift, you may be advised not to fly for a while.
  • Leave time for a check-up after the last session, especially after surgery or new dental work.
  • Note down which implant system was used and keep the plan and X-rays: your dentist at home will need them if they ever have to work on the implant.
  • If a problem appears after you get home, write to us. A fever, swelling that keeps growing or difficulty swallowing or breathing are medical emergencies: go straight to the nearest hospital or call the emergency number of the country you are in (112 in the European Union).

Frequently asked questions

What does an English-speaking dentist in Bucharest do differently for patients from abroad?

They take language and time into account: they explain everything in a language you understand and split the treatment into stages that fit the days you are spending in Bucharest.

Yes, all three, and French as well. You can discuss the diagnosis, the treatment options and the prices in whichever language you find easiest.

How many trips do I need for a dental implant?

Usually two: one for placing the implant and one for the crown, about 3 months later. The exact interval depends on the bone, and you'll find out after the consultation.

The written plan before treatment and the fiscal documents after payment. Find out directly from your insurer what else they need, before you start treatment.
