However well you brush, plaque hardens into tartar in the areas that are hard to reach. Tartar irritates the gums, causes bleeding and bad breath and, over time, leads to gum disease, also known as periodontal disease: an inflammatory condition of the tissues that support the teeth. Left untreated, it can progress and lead to receding gums, loose teeth and even tooth loss. A professional cleaning every 6 months is the simplest and cheapest way to avoid long and expensive treatment.
A cleaning has three steps. Scaling removes tartar with ultrasound, and below the gumline or for sensitive patients we complete it with the laser. Air-Flow uses a controlled jet of air, water and a special powder that removes the bacterial biofilm and surface stains caused by coffee, tea, tobacco or other staining foods and drinks. Professional polishing polishes the tooth surfaces with a rotating brush and a professional paste and removes any remaining plaque.
It all takes 45 to 60 minutes, does not hurt and does not harm the enamel. Your teeth are visibly cleaner. It is also the recommended step before whitening, braces or an implant.
